The Tuning Score, a performance research format developed by Lisa Nelson (coming to Portland early in 2008!), asks what do we see when we’re looking at dance. It offers a communication/feedback system to an ensemble of players, often interdisciplinary, who act equally as directors, performers, and spectators. Calls are uttered by players within and on the perimeter of the action. A single run can last 5 minutes or several hours and often uses just a few calls.

Conceived and directed by Linda Austin, circus me around is inspired by the zings of pleasure and pricklings of curiosity aroused by fleeting and partial views of activities in the city landscape. For this multi-disciplinary work, architects Ean Eldred, Richard Garfield, John Kashiwabara and Peter Nylen create an environment assembled of skeletal scafflolding and a translucent shrink wrap skin, yielding various vantage points for the viewing of three simultaneous dances amid the clattering, dripping, clicking, whooping, and fluttering of Seth Nehil’s spatialized sound score. Costumes are by David Rafn, Linda Austin and the performers. The set and bodies are enhanced by the lighting wizardry of Jeff Forbes.
This performance is funded in part by RACC + Oregon Arts Commission.
3. Tahni Holt | endless ocean, endless sky performance
Chapter 54:
I dreamt of a performance.
The audience was huddled on a snow bank.
There was an iceberg.
There was a largest sound.
A something is dying sound,
a ripping apart sound, an I can’t see you sound.
There was the crystal ice that fell from a hundred feet above
that broke from the iceberg sound.
There was the rippling of blue
where the ice entered the water sound, a beautiful echo.
Reminding me of sound waves made 3D.
What was one was now made into two.
The audience gave a standing ovation.
endless ocean endless sky
A performance by Tahni Holt.
