Elyse Sewell shows off the bruises…

This is a sad one. Apparently The Shins keyboard player Marty Crandall got violent with his girlfriend, Elyse Sewell. Minus one for Portland, bad form. Here’s Elyse Sewell’s blog update.

The NME reports – “Marty Crandall, keyboardist with The Shins has been arrested in California following a violent incident involving his girlfriend. Crandall was taken into police custody in Sacramento, CA on Friday night (January 4) after a domestic violence dispute in a hotel room. According to a Live Journal blog posted by Crandall’s girlfriend Elyse Sewell, the keyboardist was intoxicated and assaulted her. Sewell, a former contestant on ‘America’s Next Top Model’, says she “escaped from the room through a blitzkrieg of violence”. She also posted photos of her heavily bruised arms.”

More music and no violence at Pampelmoose

Mr. Crandall is currently innocent. Remember, it’s the state’s burden to prove his guilt. We have no idea what happened that night. Girlfriend could have been drinking, could have started physical fight, etc. I question the motive’s of someone who chooses to publish an incident like this on her blog for the world to see.

I agree. I took a look at her blog and it seemed to promote the details of the event at a later time.

Now, looking over there, that is gone or locked away due to “the advice of many commenters (lawyerly types) and friends-lock my last entry about the legal foibles between me and my ex-boyfriend.”

Granted, the Shins transplanted to Portland from New Mexico, so we can’t really “minus one” Portland for this. Yeah, they may have been a bit ahead of the hipster curve in finding our fair city, but this is simply another case of immigrants coming here and lowering our quality of life.

Can we build a fence? Two tiers, south of Ashland?

Everyone is innocent until proven guilty. However, comments like “girlfriend could have been drinking” are certainly not helpful. Even if she was wasted, he has no right to assault her, sheeesh.

Yes everyone is innocent until proven guilty but maybe Marty not his girlfriend had been drinking. Why does she have to be sober to be battered? Strange POV. There is no excuse for violence within relationships nor does alcoholic intake justify anything. She said in the original statement that I read that she bit him to defend herself from “a blitzkrieg of violence” (her words). Sounds just plain bad.

Everyone is innocent in court until proven guilty. In public opinion, that is not true. In public opinion, it looks pretty bad for this guy.

This entire incident spawned from reckless behavior from both parties. Both Elyse AND Marty were arrested, and when arrested BOTH were completely wasted. It was deemed mutual combat by the police when they were picked up and that is why they were both arrested. The fact that Elyse sprung herself from jail and then immediately blogs HER version of the incident (which, mind you, leaves out very incriminating details and leaves the reader with an image of the two enjoying their tacos and then Marty suddenly going ape on her) shows her absolute lack of maturity and a wicked vendetta out for her ex-beau. As far as I’m concerned, she looks like a spoiled, egotistical little girl that didn’t want to have to own up to her own irresponsible behavior and found an easy out in crying “abuse.”
Oh, and I just happened to see the two while in Albuquerque for the holidays and she was sporting the alleged bruises before Christmas. So much for her credibility..

When I said “she could have been drinking” I should have been more clear. Most “minor” DV incidents involve mutual intoxication. There is a bias in our society that men abuse and women are victims because for the most part, that is true. However, I have represented women DV defendants on many occasssions. Most states mandate arrest when there is even an accusation of domestic violence. This is far from the burden that must be demonstrated to convict. If you agree with our current legal system, he is innocent. I don’t give a shit what public opinion mandates.
