THE CHOIR INVISIBLE Sunday Feb. 24 1-5 pm — FREE
Admission is ongoing, arrive any time
When we sing, it’s rarely off the cuff, or for very long at one time. Hymns in church, “Happy Birthday,” favorite CDs. Ever wonder what would happen if you just, well, sang? That’s the plan, anyway—sing for four hours, and see what happens. Composer John Berendzen will introduce a loose “score” to serve as a starting point for this organic meditation on the voice, but there’s no telling where participants will end up. No experience or ability to read music is required—just listen and respond. Presented in connection with Performance Works NorthWest’s new Sunday multi-arts series, ALEMBIC. –Willamette Week

THE TUNING PROJECT with LISA NELSON Feb. 25-Mar. 5

“In looking for improvisational systems that could encompass the particularities of the choreographic craft and still remain spontaneous and co-directed, I devised the Tuning Scores…With the scores, we play with our desire to compose experience, to make our imaginations visible, to develop a sense of ensemble, and to transform our movement into dancing.” — Lisa Nelson

KO&Co. presents Convergence
February 23rd 2008 at 8pm & February 24th 2008 at 7pm
$14 General/ $10 Artists & Under 10yrs
info + reservations: 971.226.1681 or koco@earthlink.net
Tickets: brownpapertickets.com
Limbs fight their way to a transient mark. Bodies engage as they arrive and leave simultaneously. A solo figure chases after a fleeting finale. Far off figures press against you. Convergence, a new KO&Co. evening-length dance, takes on the consistency of change, the course of decision, the state of obstacle, the change of plan, defining of an endpoint, and more; all to breakdown and reshape what it means to get from point A to point B. Two long mirroring corridors separated solely by a row of audience seating ground the dancers as they define where here and there converge. KO&Co. revels in investigating the impact of space, perspective as shaped point-of-view, and the weaving of improvisational and choreographic forms. Convergence develops these themes as they explore the relationship between moving away and moving towards, the expectations of arriving and departing, and the hues of in-between spaces. KO&Co. is led by Katrina O’Brien and includes dancers Patricia Germann, Chane Gilbert, Jessica Hightower, Esther LaPointe and Shannon Parsons.-back to top

HELP WOOLLY BENEFIT (EXTRAVAGANZA)
March 2nd, 2008, 8PM, Holocene

Send Local Dance Collective Woolly Mammoth Comes to Dinner to Mexico

Coming off a brief hiatus from performing in Linda Austin’s circus me around, local dance collective Woolly Mammoth Comes to Dinner gets back into the swing of things on Sunday, March 2nd at Holocene with an evening featuring some of our favorite local musicians and performers.

The party kicks off at 8pm, and once you leave your donation (sliding scale $10-20) at the door, you’ll be well on your way to a night of ass-shaking and party-making. An impressive roster of musicians will be playing in the back room—Tara Jane O’Neil, Cex Fucx, Evolutionary Jass Band, Starfucker, Bryce Panic (Mirah’s dancing and rapping drummer)—interspersed with a special mini-presentation of Ten Tiny Dances in the front. Performers featured on the Tiny stage will include: Fever Theater, “the original YouTube cover band” Rush-N-Disco, and local dance heroes Linda Austin and Karen Nelson presenting The Tuning Score with an ensemble of veteran dancers from California, Texas, and Vermont. Of course, dear little Woolly Mammoth also promises to make a very special appearance. We are hoping local legend Fred Nemo shows up to climb a ladder or two, but we can’t get through at Fred’s current phone number.

The evening also includes a silent auction where you can place bids on gift certificates galore from places such as: Tiga, Lovely Hula Hands, Podnah’s Pit BBQ, Hi iH Gallery, the Fresh Pot, and items like: PICA tickets, delicious wine, massages, a Gyrotonic session, dance classes at Conduit, and yoga classes.

All this partying and fundraising is to help Woolly get to Mexico, where the trio has been invited to teach and perform at Performatica, an international performance art festival in Puebla, just outside Mexico City (http://performatica.org/). Designed to make contemporary dance accessible for everyone, the festival offers professional-level master classes to hundreds of students at absolutely no cost.
