Previous Post and MP3 from Pampelmoose:

China Forbes (of Pink Martini) releases debut album | MP3

China Forbes, the longtime lead singer of Pink Martini, releases her debut solo album February 26th on Heinz Records.

“On her long awaited solo album, ’78, Forbes dusts off her guitar and returns to her singer-songwriter roots. She recorded the album of strikingly personal songs in her hometown of Portland, Oregon with producer/drummer Gregg Williams (Sheryl Crow, The Wallflowers, Dandy Warhols). Backed by Williams on drums and multi-instrumentalist Eric Earley (Blitzen Trapper) with a cameo by Eric Matthews, Forbes played a variety of instruments, including guitar, piano, bass, harmonium and Wurlitzer.”

Jan 7: Movie Night at Aalto Lounge | Overboard | “lots of sweaty 80’s (trailer) s-e-x”

Just got an email from the M.O.B. himself about tonight’s movie night. I got this lovely picture from The Daily Mail. I have to say that I am a fan of this movie, although I haven’t seen it in many years. This is what I remember though. Kurt Russell and family trick Goldie Hawn that she is Kurt’s wife. I can’t remember why, but I think it is something about Kurt being poor and therefore can’t get a wife in the old-fashioned way.

They then have some elaborate lying scenes and she finds out that she is not his wife and some rich guy’s wife. The rich guy (who, of course is a jerk and not Kurt Russell hot), finds her and there are some elaborate boat scenes (elaborate is today’s word). She decides she would rather be with Kurt and his broke-a$$ family instead of the not-as-hot-as-Kurt (5 dash points!) rich guy. Boom! I thought that is how poor people got married until I was 12 because of this.

Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn
Julian,

Movie Night returns from its holiday hiatus with a splash tonight, and if I told you to leave your galoshes at home, I’d being doing you a huge disservice. The movie for tonight: the 1987 masterwork called Overboard. That’s right, the same one starring longtime onscreen and offscreen lovers Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell (in fact, it is rumored by people who have too much time on their hands that the two fell in love on the set, and probably had lots of sweaty ’80s s-e-x in their trailers).
Come out and dumb out. When: Tonight, 8pm sharp! Where: Aalto Lounge! SE 34th and Belmont! What: Overboard!
Sincerely,
Simon G.

Jan 4: Caves, Ohmega Watts, Gejius | Holocene | “smash-nose dirt-kick partying”

Jus got this from Jake for their show tomorrow at Holocene. Should be good. I also beleive this is the second post today referring to an article written by NILINA (including the Hot Mess post). She’s out on the scene.

Show details:
Holocene January 4th
Caves ( Serial f##k ups)
Gejius (Self-made audio stylist)
Da’rel Junior (Much fresh pdx MC)
Doors at 9pm

This week in the Portland Mercury
:
Channeling the best of ’80s pop (sans the whole retro vibe) and ’90s hook-heavy alt-rock (more Achtung-era U2 than, say, Seven Mary Three), the kids in Caves are at the forefront of a bombastic—and stylish—local rock scene. Toss in an exhilarating all-night DJ set from the one and only Ohmega Watts, and all of a sudden you have one of the best all-around bills of local talent in the early days of this new year. [GROOVE] You know that phrase, “Girl Friday,” used to describe a lady—usually a secretary—who goes above and beyond the call of duty and does everything? That phrase could totally apply to this Friday at Holocene. With such a genre-blending night to be had, there are enough bands on the bill to appeal to a host of music lovers and really hit the spot for those wanting to move. The night is stocked with the electronica of Gejius and the reggae undertones of Caves, to the indie hip-hop of Da’rel Junior and the more straightforward jazzy beats of Ohmega Watts. All of tonight’s acts complement each other: It’s like a color wheel in musical form.

Also, here is a write-up by Simon G (M.O.B. - also second reference today) about the Caves, “Tonight is going to be a lesson in smash-nose dirt-kick partying”

Dec 31: Holocene | “All presale tickets are gone, online and everywhere else.”

I just got this from Holocene. It looks like it will be packed. You have about an hour and a half to get over to buy one of the last 100 tickets.
1001 SE Morrison St, Portland, OR, 97214- Holocene

Here’s some info about tonight’s New Year’s festivities at Holocene:

All presale tickets are gone, online and everywhere else.

There will be 100 spots at the door, at 8pm - $12 each.

These will be handstamps, not tickets, and there will be no ins-and-outs between 8pm and midnight (so people who want to be here between 8 and 10 don’t have their places taken by people who aren’t even here, etc.)

If you’re here at 8pm, you’ll be happy — DJ 1996 Olympics and drink specials will be in full year-end effect!

Lineup is:

8pm - 1996 Olympics

9pm - Linoleum

10:30pm - Beyonda

12am - Linger & Quiet

That’s it. Plan on sharing cabs, as you’ll know they’ll be a little harder than usual to come by.

Happy New Year!

Dec 20: Film, Music, Stage Plays, Beer, and more | Audiocinema | No Cover

I’ve known Peter (Wideshot Studios) for a long time. He has been working on Paula Sophia most, if not all of that time. It is the story a police officer in Oklahoma City that goes through a sex change. It is interesting subject matter for sure, and from the clips I saw three or so years ago–should be very interesting. You can see a trailer at his site. I believe the first line is a guy saying he has never seen a “lady police officer of your statue”. I met Paula a few times. She was a large man, and so is now a large woman.

Peter (Hermes) has done a lot of good work including some work (most, all?) of Flaming Lips Videos. In fact, I saw a quick clip of Paula Sophia in police mode in the Flaming Lips “Fearless Freaks” film. That is her beat, but I am sure it was no coincidence. If you need a police clip–boom–Peter’s got about 500 hours of them.
