Novmber 4: The Barfly Nominees are in and The Award Show is Today at Mt. Tabor Legacy

This is an invite-only event. Normally, I would not post invite-only here, but it was already on the Barfly website, and hey–you might know one of these people and possibly mooch one of their VIP tix…I mean, congratulate them. And why am I not up for “Most Good Writer”–sounds like it was written specifically for my illiteracy (rhyming on-timing!).

My lovely fall sickness seems to be nearly gone (the contagion is for sure), so I’m going to do my best to get out there tonight as several of these people are friends of mine (Atom 13, Malice, Chris Haberman, Phil Ragaway, William Slater - “hottest item not on the menu”= ha!). If so, expect some good pictures this coming week.

Now Non-contagious, Julian

And the nominees are…

The people have spoken, and BarFly has listened. Final BarFly Award voting will be conducted live and in person at the ultra-fabulous, oh-so-exclusive, BarFly Awards Gala, on Sunday, November 4th - check your inboxes for your personal invites, beautiful people, and hope your tears don’t stain your pillowcases, hoi polloi.

Now, without further ado, the 2007 BarFly Award nominees are… Read the rest of this entry »

Oct 3: the aliens get a hot chip remix [MP3]

The Aliens Hot Chip Remix

The Aliens, former members of the Beta Band, have a lovely remix of their track Robot Man by Hot Chip. They play Doug Fir on October 3rd.

From their website - Armed with a bottomless bag of psychedelically inclined rock and acid dipped electronics, The Aliens bring a freedom of spirit and a certainty of intent that immediately sets them out from the current crop of guitar slingers. Inspired by Sergio Leone and Serge Gainsbourg, Brian Eno and Brian Wilson, Larry David and Ol’ Dirty Bastard, their songs in the key of Fife reference the past whilst belonging resolutely to the future. These Aliens have history - between them they have been behind some of the most enthralling British music of the last decade. John Maclean and Robin Jones were members of the Beta Band. Gordon Anderson was a founding Beta Band member who went on to record two albums under the Lone Pigeon moniker.

August 20th: the detroit cobras, tonight (Monday) @ doug fir

Bloodshot Records recording artists The Detroit Cobras bring their brand of raunchy rock and R’n'B to the Doug Fir tonight (Monday Aug 20 - short notice I know.) Here’s what the press is saying:

“No offense to Amy Winehouse, but it was the Cobras‚ Rachel Nagy who first reinvented the 60s soul-pop diva as a boozy, punk-informed, smart-mouthed chanteuse in the late 90s.” Falling James LA Weekly

“Your average Best Buying doofus won’t give a damn about any of it, but one thing I’ve noticed about the Detroit Cobras is that if you actually play them for someone that knows nothing about them, or you take someone to see a show, the band’s so totally infectious and convincing that you’ll have a new convert on your hands in no time.” Jeff Clark Stomp and Stammer

“…the Cobras do the unthinkable: make rock n’ roll simple, fun and irresponsible.” Bruce Miller, Magnet
