Oh Snap! Hear the Crackle of the PDX Pop Now! Fest! July 24-26
Summer is definitely the season of choice for music festivals. I could list them all on both hands and quickly run out of fingers to count on. Not to mention empty my bank account and go into debt attending all of them. But if there’s one collection of music in one venue that you should go to this summer AND you’re a broke child of Portland (like many of us are), PDX Pop Now! Fest is for you!
Three days worth of bands playing inside and outside stages at Rotture (rotture.com) in SE for free. Free! Make sure to take a break from The Oregon Brewers Festival (link to pipeline post?) and the Portland Zine Symposium (link to PZS post on pipeline) to come catch some of Portland’s best bands!
Just a handful of what I’m looking forward to…
Ah Holly Fam’ly (ahholly.com)
Folk the way it should be done. Family style. And with a ton of instruments!

The Old Believers (http://myspace.com/oldbelievers)
They’ve got that Wall of Sound sound, but more on the open field side. They’re like Fleet Foxes with a girl vocalist, great folk harmonies and lyrics that will tear your heart out for all their sincerity.

Magic Johnson (http://www.myspace.com/magicjohnsonmusic)
Lo-fi punk moved from LA, absorbed all the Pacific Northwest vibes, and spit them back with a touch of Portland. With a name like Magic Johnson, they should be able to survive anything.

PDX Pop Now!’s 2009 compilation is also out now and you’ll be able to pick it up at the fest if you don’t have it already. It features both the big and tiny noisemakers of Portland, from M. Ward to Jared Mees & The Grown Children, Starfucker to The Thermals, Magic Johnson, Mirah, Lovers, and more! 2 Discs, 40 tracks, all for $8? Talk about a steal. I mean deal. Don’t steal it, just buy it!
